2015 | Specification, Build, Support
We developed a cloud-based web application to allow this large scrap metal processing business to easily record details of their transactions.
J Davidson are a family-run business, established in 1970; they have grown to become one of the North West’s largest scrap metal dealers. Their core business is the recycling of all types of metal products; the company currently recycles around 40,000 tonnes of metal each year.
With the introduction of the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, scrap metal processors were required to undertake checks and keep records of all transactions, including the requirement that sellers of scrap metal provide identification at the point of sale, which must be recorded by the scrap metal processor.
J Davidson had a legacy system that ran locally using a Microsoft Access database. However, the system was quickly becoming outdated and inefficient.
Avid engaged with key stakeholders at J Davidson; a specification and prototyping phase allowed us to examine the functionality of the legacy system and subsequently to produce a wireframe prototype – allowing users at J Davidson to see a visual representation of the proposed system.
We developed a web-based system using Microsoft SQL Server as the database; data from the legacy system was migrated into the new database. The app was coded using C# and Active Server Pages (ASP.NET) – Microsoft’s enterprise level development environment, along with Bootstrap, custom CSS and JQuery.
The system was developed to enhance ease of use for staff entering scrappage information and has been well received. Users have found it easy to make the change to the new system. Data is held securely offsite with a backup schedule implemented. The new system implements a proper audit trail and is readily available to the police for their regular inspections and specific queries.
The app is a private one, however you can see the public face of J Davidson at www.jdavidsonscrap.com
